Project Overview

Suzhou Museum is one of the latest masterpiece of Yuming Pei (I. M. Pei), a famous architect who designed the disputable pyramids in front of the Louvre Palace. As for Suzhou Museum, Pei selected purely geometrical lines to imitate the sense of typical Suzhou gardens, making it harmonious with the real gardens around. The design of this architecture is traditional while modern, simple while sublime.

To align the style of signage system better with the architecture, I modified the original design to make it more geometrical and fun. To apply the style of both modern outlook and traditional spirit, I took the typical shape of rooftop of museum as the foundation of the signage system and created a lot of variations. A lot of grey lines and orange highlights were used to match the general feeling of Suzhou Museum as well. I also re-designed the typography and icon system, which improves the visual identity holistically.

The signage system utilized different materials and negative space to illustrate the entirety of different elements in same environment. Most of the signage were also designed in 3D view, considering there are a lot of corners inside the museum, and people will come from different directions. This new design helps express the rich and profound meaning of museum through simple and clean visual language.
